Tomas M. Salazar, Sr., 80, of Columbus City, died Monday, December 20, 2010 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. A Celebration of Tomas’s life was held at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Columbus Junction. Pastor James Cluney and Pastor Mike McAfee officiated the services. Burial was in Columbus City Cemetery. Casketbearers were Todd Salazar, Sean Salazar,Tomas Salazar III, Jose Muñoz, Jr., David DeLaO and Tim Salazar. Honorary casketbearers will be Davin Lingren, Raul Perez, Jr., Donnie Orr, Ian Toye and Daniel Galvan. Following services at the cemetery, a time of food and fellowship was held at the Columbus Junction American Legion. Visitation for Tomas was held on Monday, December 27th from 4:00–8:00 P.M. at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Victory Christian Center and the First Assembly of God in memory of Tomas. Tomas Maltos Salazar was born December 29, 1929 in El Moral, Coahuila, Mexico, the son of Hilario and Victoriana (Maltos) Salazar. On May 6, 1947 Tomas was united in marriage to Emma Menchaca in Ciudad Acuna, Mexico. She preceded him in death on July 30, 2005. On September 28, 2006 Tomas married Dona Lane in Wapello, Iowa, and they worked together on their farm. Previously he had retired from GPC of Muscatine as a machine operator. He was a member of the First Assembly of God in Washington and was a past member of the Fredonia Independent Gospel Church where he was very active. He also attended Victory Christian Center in Columbus Junction. Tomas enjoyed gardening, fishing, dancing and cooking, especially Mexican dishes. In 1962 he cooked for the film actor John Wayne on the set of “The Alamo”. Tomas also enjoyed family gatherings and spending time with his grandchildren.

Tomas will be deeply missed by his wife, Dona of Columbus City; three sons, Roger Salazar and his wife, Laurie of Columbus Junction, Tomas M. Salazar, Jr. and his wife, Carla of Columbus City and Abel Salazar and his wife, Karen of Columbus Junction; three daughters, Yolanda Muñoz and her husband, Josè of Fort Madison, Lety Perez and her husband, Raul of Columbus Junction and Margie DeLaO and her husband, David of Columbus City; 14 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Tomas was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Emma; one great-grandson, Josiah David Lingren; one great-granddaughter, Halley Munoz; two sisters, Lupe Galvan and Maria Galvan; and two brothers, Hilario Salazar, Jr. and Juan Antonio Salazar.
