Walter “Jack” Mohnssen, 83, lifelong resident of Letts, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at Carrington Place of Muscatine. Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, September 13, 2010, at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. Casket bearers were Robert Lowe, Richard Turner, Chet Hafner, Jerry Lamp, Everett Howell and Tim Whittaker. Honorary casket bearers were Jack Estle, Orville Meeker, James Coder and Mike O’Toole. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Following the interment a time of food and fellowship was held at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Community Room. Visitation for Jack was held on Sunday, September 12th, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. Memorials may be directed to the Hospice Compassus, Salvation Army or charity of giver’s choice in memory of Jack. Sympathy notes may be left for the Mohnssen family at www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

Walter Mohnssen was born on January 16, 1927, in Muscatine County, the son of Peter Jacob and Rose E. (Trautman) Mohnssen. Jack was a graduate of Letts Consolidated School. On June 26, 1949, Jack was united in marriage to Arlene Marie Miller at the Sweetland United Methodist Church. Jack was a farmer, retiring from dairy farming in 1974 and grain farming in 1975. Following his retirement, Jack started a lawn mowing business and did other jobs for people. He was a member of the Letts United Methodist Church, Grandview-Letts Lions Club, Muscatine County Farm Bureau, Ced-O Six Farm Bureau, the Methodist Men’s Breakfast Club, and also served on the Muscatine County Zoning Commission. Jack was an avid reader and was very active in the United Methodist Crop Walk.

Jack will be deeply missed by his children, Kevin D. Mohnssen and his wife, Patty of Ankeny, Sheree D. Garner and her husband, Rick of Beaverton, Oregon and Randy D. Mohnssen of Letts; eight grandchildren; Karen (Patrick) Hughes, Kristen Mohnssen, Bethany, Ryan and Kacy Garner, Randi (Trevor) Woodward, Gregg (Jen) Mohnssen and Jacob McFadon; two great-grandchildren, Jack and Claire Woodward; one sister, June Jennings and her husband, Royal of Winfield and many nieces and nephews.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Arlene on June 26, 2010, two sons, Dennis Dean and Gregory Allen Mohnssen and one brother in infancy.
