Mary L. Hammond

Mary Louise Hammond, 73, of Wapello, Iowa, died at 9 a.m. Friday, November 20, 2009, at her home.

Born on December 3, 1935 in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of James Raymond and Lela Maude Kimbrough Helmick. On January 12, 1957, she married John William Hammond at the Louisa Center Church in rural Wapello.

Mary left school in 1951. Then in 1984 she went back and received her GED along with a friend, Lisa. She enjoyed doing factory work for most of her working days.

She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing bingo with her sisters, and computer games. She was of the Christian Faith. She was a member of the Women of the Moose Chapter 587 in Burlington and the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 5166 at Wapello.

Survivors include her two sons, Max L. and Adrianna Hammond and Jeff and Katie Hammond, both of Wapello; five grandchildren, Samantha and Aaron Rosbury of Burlington, Christopher Hammond of Smyrna, Delaware, Joshua Hammond of Wapello, and Kamdyn and Kenzie Hammond of Wapello; two great-grandchildren Christian and Alyssa Rosbury of Burlington; three brothers, Tom and Sue Helmick of Burlington, John and Marty Helmick of Sherman, Texas and Jack and Debbie Helmick of Washington, Iowa; three sisters, Lela Tull of Burlington, Helen and Bob Riley of West Burlington and Patricia and Rodney Boney of Ector, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Karen Helmick and Kim Helmick both of Burlington; two brothers-in-law, Paul Schaefer of Burlington and Bradley Soule of Muscatine; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Hammond in August of 2006; her parents, three sisters, Maxine Schaefer, Karen Sue Soule, and Carol Warth; and three brothers, Dale Helmick, Dave Helmick and Jim Helmick.

Visitation was Sunday, November 22, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello, where the family met with friends in the evening.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, November 23, 2009, at the Wapello Cemetery.

A memorial fund was established.
