VETERAN SOLDIER DIED THIS MORNING

Joel Chenoweth, an old resident of Muscatine and member of Shelby Norman Post No. 231 died at 10:22 o'clock this morning after a lingering illness. He passed away at his residence, 1118 Mulberry avenue, death resulting from a complication of diseases.

The deceased, who was seventy-three years of age, enlisted on September 11, 1861, in Company K, Eighth Iowa infantry, which was organized at Davenport. He was missing in action and was taken prisoner April 6, 1862, at the battle of Shiloh, Tenn. He was discharged August 20, 1862. On October 1, 1863, he enlisted in Company A of the Ninth Iowa calvary. He was promoted to second sergeant on October 27, 1864, and was finally mustered out at Little Rock, February 28, 1866.

Mr. Chenoweth was a native of Ohio. The funeral arrangements had not been made this afternoon.
