Mary Bernice Hayes, age 93, of Iowa City, Iowa, died February 7, 1999, at the Colonial Manor Care Center, Columbus Junction, Iowa, the result of complications related to pneumonia.

Mary Bernice Rose was born May 11, 1905, in Edina, Missouri, the daughter of John and Ellen Drummy Rose. Mary married Dr. Charles Bernard Hayes. She and her husband shared a lifelong interest in horse racing. Dr. Hayes died in 1963.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Mariagnes Shumway, Reston, Virginia; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

There will be no visitation or funeral services in Iowa. Burial will be at a later date in Omaha, Nebraska.
