Marjorie Whiting Pettis, age 96, of Wapello, Iowa, died Sunday afternoon, August 15, 1993 at the Wapello Nursing & Care Center.

She was born November 18, 1896 at North Attleboro, Massachusetts, the daughter of Artner B. and Mabel Whiting Chase. Marjorie Chase had graduated from high School in North Attleboro and had attended the University of Rhode Island. She worked at the War Dept. in Washington where she met Ben Pettis. They were married in May of 1919 at Chicago, Illinois. They moved to Wapello where he had purchased the Weldon Drug Store. She worked with her husband for many years at the Pettis Drug Store until its closing in 1955. She also worked as the Librarian for the Keck Memorial Library from 1961 - 1974. Ben preceded her in death on November 23, 1967.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church at Wapello, having served for a time on the board of trustees and also as Superintendent of the Junior Sunday School. She was a life member of the Women's Society of Christian Service. She was also a member of the Louisa County Historical Society where she had chaired a committee in 1968 that published an index to the 'Springer's History of Louisa County'.

Survivors include three daughters, Eunice M. Barry of Dickinson, North Dakota, Annette Mess of Delta, Ontario, Canada, and Mary Ellen Nazzola of Alpine, California; one son, John Pettis of Burlington; thirteen grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one sister; and two brothers.

The funeral service for Marjorie Pettis will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 19, 1993 at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home with the Rev. Ed Philgreen officiating. Kathleen Hagele will provide the organ music with Marcia Thie as vocalist. The casket bearers will be Wm. L. Matthews, Ed Hicklin, Jim Earnest, Jim DeVore, Dick Johnson and Ronald Cross. Burial will be at the Wapello Cemetery. The family will meet friends Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 8:00 at Dudgeon-McCulley.

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the Keck Memorial Library.
