Marion M. Bates, 93, 1203 E. Washington St., Washington, IA, died Saturday, October 18, 1997, at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington. She had been in failing health the past two years.

Jones & Eden Funeral Home, Washington, Iowa is in charge of arrangements and the funeral service for Marion Bates will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997 in conjunction with Evensong services at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington, Iowa. Interment will be in the Oakland Cemetery, Louisa County, at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the United Presbyterian Home, 1203 E. Washington St., Washington, IA 52353.

Marion was born September 15, 1904 in Louisa County to Howard and Licia Nichols Bates. She was a graduate of the Wapello High School, attended Parsons College in Fairfield, received her BA Degree from the University of Iowa and her MA from the State College of Education in Greeley, CO. She taught school for 39 years in Malvern, Anamosa, Davenport, and Louisa County, and had resided in Washington since October 1, 1872.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Wapello, IA, Delta Kappa Gama, Washington Area Retired Teachers, Louisa County Historical Society, Iowa State Education Association, and the National Education Association.

Marion is survived by 2 nieces and 2 nephews, and cousins Robert Bates of Washington, IA and Betty Bayne of Fairfax, IA, the last of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters and 2 brothers.
