Leonard Leroy 'Red' Kemp, age 62, of rural Wapello, Iowa, died Saturday evening, October 25, 1997 at his home.

The son of Everett Leroy and Mary Frances Jackson Kemp, he was born April 15, 1935 at Grandview. He married Marilyn Joan Murray on October 8, 1955 at Grandview.

Leonard was a graduate of Grandview High School in 1952. He had worked at Grain Processing Corporation of Muscatine, IAAP of Burlington, Keltner Construction of Wapello, Lewis Bros. of Muscatine, and Jackson - Kemp Excavating before beginning full time farming in 1974. He also operated Kemp Welding.

He was an active member of the Grandview-Letts Lions Club having a record of 14 years of perfect attendance. He was just recently presented the Warren Coleman Lions Award. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge of Burlington, the Indian Hills Golf and Country Club, the Louisa County Farm Bureau, and the Louisa County Corn Growers Association. He enjoyed playing golf and bowling along with traveling and enjoying the Arizona winters. He loved his family and especially enjoyed the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; three children, Denise Foutch of Burlington, Denny Kemp of Ankeny, and Dana Bonnichsen of Grandview; four grandchildren, Kelly Foutch, Kari Foutch, Beau Bonnichsen, and Bailee Bonnichsen; two great-grandchildren, Karlie Foutch and Carter Newcomb; three step-grandchildren, Stephanie Reeves, Curtis Oldham, and Sean Oldham; his mother, Mary Frances Kemp of Grandview; and six sisters and a brother, Charlene Kemp of Grandview, Vera Harvey of Muscatine, Connie Fougerty of Orange, California, Frances Wilson of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Gary Kemp of Letts, Shirley Bramble of Muscatine, and Debi Estabrook of Marshalltown. He was preceded in death by his father.

The funeral service for Leonard Kemp was held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 28, 1997 at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello with the Rev. Darryl Erickson officiating. Music was provided by Bev Parsons as the organist and Wayne Gieselman as the vocalist singing 'In the Garden' and 'How Great Thou Art'.

Burial followed at the Grandview Cemetery. The casket bearers included Dale Hafner, Gene Jackson, Bill Beik, Dwight Schaper, Wayne Barnes, and Tom Pogemiller. The honorary bearers were Howard Weber, Warren Stineman, Leslie Perkins, Lawrence Rowe, Chet Hafner, and Jerry Cocklin.

The family met with friends Monday afternoon and evening at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established.
