Mrs. Alice Huston, 70, of Columbus Junction, died Tuesday, April 21, 1992, at her home.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home with Rev. Lynne Smith officiating. Donna Belle Hughes was organist and Jay and Lorie Hauenstein were vocalist. Honorary casket bearers were Howard Hagen, Larry Prior, Ed Tubbs, John Spies, Rand Petersen, Cary Rutt, Howard Hall and LeRoy Hughes. Casket bearers were James Jewell, Nolan Stogdill, Merle Rueckert, F.D. Smylie, John Chrystal and Bill Hess. Burial was in the Columbus City Cemetery.

Mrs. Huston was born February 8, 1922, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Louis and Harriet Weller Leutner. She graduated from Bucknell University and taught French and Spanish in various Pennsylvania schools.

In 1946, she married Dr. N. Dean Rowland and lived in Lancaster, Pensylvania. She moved to Arizona in 1966 and took a teaching position at the University of Arizona where she met Thomas Huston. they were married August 8, 1966, in Columbus Junction.

Mrs. Huston was a very organized individual and was active in many ways. She collected teddy bears and was well known in the area for her talks about them to various women's organizations. She was an elder of the Columbus Junction United Presbyterian Church where she was instrumental in the construction of the steeple and the redecorating of the church. She also attempted to have the church placed on the National Historic Registry. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Women, Chapter CX, P.E.O., the Half-Hour Club, Kappa Delta Sorority, Columbus Junction Public Library Board, the Friends of the Library Organization assisting in the remodeling of the library, and the Iowa Historic Foundation Board.

Alice was an avid opera fan and reader and loved to travel.

Her memorial funds will be donated to the Des Moines Metro Opera and the Columbus Junction United Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband of Columbus Junction; five children, Mrs. Susan Huston Garman of Vail, Colorado, Dean Rowland of West Des Moines, Mark Huston of Columbus Junction, Mrs. Sarah Rowland Wells of Des Moines and John Huston of Tonka Bay, Wisconsin; and ten grandsons.
