Ada Gertrude Palmer Balmos, 81 of 1419 First Ave., Muscatine, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999 at Muscatine General Hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. The Rev. John P. Gallagher will officiate. Pallbearers will be David Timm, Don Stange, Clyde "Pete" Beeding, William Herath, Eric Whisler, Robert Harbaugh, Kermit Kinsley and John Oberhaus. Paul Jasper will serve as an Honorary Pallbearer. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Crazy Horse Monument in South Dakota.

Mrs. Balmos was born on Dec. 8, 1917, in Milner, Idaho, the daughter of Luther Thayer and Gertrude Esther Spencer Palmer. She married Col. Wilber Henry Balmos on April 26, 1945, in Neumea, New Caladonia.

She graduated from Nampa High School in 1936, and also graduated from the St. Alphonsus Hospital School of Nursing in Boise, Idaho, in 1940.

She was a Red Cross Nurse and World War II veteran, having served as a US Army Nurse from 1942 to 1945. She served 18 months in the South Pacific obtaining the rank of First Lieutenant.

She also worked as a Registered Nurse at Muscatine General Hospital for several years.

Survivors include her husband, Wilbur Balmos of Muscatine; three daughters, Anne Sanney of Wilton, Patty Herath and her husband, William, of East Moline, IL, and Judy Beeding and her husband, Clyde "Pete", of Oakville; two grandchildren, Jonathan Luther Herath of Urbana, Ill. and Anna M. Herath of East Moline, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Glenna Marie Rode and Beere Thompson; two brothers in infancy; and a son-in-law, Fred Sanney.
