County officials have not released the cause of a Louisa County jail inmate's death Saturday evening.
Jeffery Mark Tompkins, 20, Rt. 1, Conesville, reportedly was found unconcious in his cell block about 8:35 p.m. by fellow inmates. CPR was administered to Tompkins by a deputy before a rescue unit and the Louisa County medical examiner, Dr. David Hull arrived. Hull pronounced Tompkins dead at the scene.
An autopsy was performed Sunday at the University Hospitals, Iowa City, but a report has not been released.
Tompkins had been arrested in Wapello on March 5 and charged with false use of a financial instrument and theft in the first degree. He was released from the Louisa County Jail at 12:43 p.m. Friday, April 10, after posting $1,000, 10% of his bond. At 6:10 p.m. he was apprehanded in West Liberty, charged with auto theft and transported back to the Louisa County Jail.
