James Lawrence Martin, 79, of 1410 S. Garfield Ave., Burlington, died at 1 p.m. Monday, May 27, 1996, at Burlington Medical Center.

Born Sept. 19, 1916, at Morning Sun, he was the son of William and Sylvia Fern Hill Martin. He married Veda May Rehling March 8, 1953, in Burlington. She died April 3, 1978.

He was a graduate of the Winfield High School and a World War II Army Veteran.

Mr. Martin worked as a purchasing agent for J.I. Case Company before retiring. He then worked at Drake Hardware. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Burlington and American Legion Post No. 643 in Winfield.

Survivors include one sister, Lois Martin, of Irvine, Calif.; a nephew; a niece; a special friend, Tammy Fanning of Mediapolis; and several cousins.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. There will be no visitation.

A graveside memorial service for Mr. Martin will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Carman Cemetery in Carman, Ill., with the Rev. David Rogula officiating. The body has been cremated.

A memorial has been established for the people's choice. Lunning Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
