SUDDEN DEATH OF PROMINENT WOMAN

HEART FAILURE CAUSES DEATH OF MRS. J.E. HOWE
("506 East 8 st" is handwritten)

Is Stricken With Fatal Attack Shortly After 3 o'clock This Morning and End Comes Soon.

Many Muscatine people were shocked this morning to hear of the announcement of the death of Mrs. J.E. Howe, which occurred at the family residence at an early hour today. Her death was very sudden and was due to heart failure. Several weeks ago she was ill, but she had seemingly recovered and yesterday took an active part in making the annual sale of the Methodist ladies a success. She was at the Hershey building until the evening and while somewhat fatigued when she returned to her home, her condition was not such as to give any premonition of the untimely close of the useful life. Mrs. Howe was stricken with the fatal attack of heart failure shortly after three o'clock this morning, and passed away about twenty minutes later. The members of the household were greatly shocked with the realization of the loss which they had sustained.

Mrs. Howe was very prominently known in this city and her death is a matter of the deepest regret to all those who knew her. The family is greatly bereaved because of the unexpected and sudden loss. Mrs. Howe enjoyed the highest esteem and respect of a large acquaintanceship and well merited it.

Born in East.

Miss Elmira Hurlbut was born in Armstrong county, Pennsylvania, on February 18, 1848, and forty-seven years ago she was united in marriage in Clarion county, Pennsylvania, to J.E. Howe. Ten years later they moved to Muscatine and since that time have enjoyed an enviable position in the community. Mrs. Howe is survived by three sons, Edward Herbert Howe, of Jackson, Miss.; A.D. Rolland Howe, of Muscatine and Dr. George Howe also of this city, together with her husband. One son, Jared Howe died fifteen years ago.

A Church Worker

Mrs. Howe was a faithful member of the First Methodist church and was prominent in several of the societies of that church. She has been very active in the Ladies' Aid society and took a deep interest in the Sunday school department, being assistant superintendent. She was also a member of both the home and foreign missionary societies. She was also included in the membership of the Shades Reading Circle and the Kensington club.

No funeral arrangements have been made as yet.
