Mrs. Catherine Haight, a life-long and highly esteemed resident of Elliot Township, passed away at the St. Francis Hospital in Burlington, Friday at noon following a few weeks illness.

Catherine Downey was born in Mercer County, Illinois, Sept. 18, 1868; departed this life June 14, 1940, at the age of 71 years, 8 months, and 26 days.

At two years of age she came with her parents to Iowa, the family settling on the land now a part of the town of Oakville. Here she grew to womanhood.

She was united in marriage to James W. Haight, June 15, 1887. they began housekeeping on the farm southeast of Oakville, for over 50 years known as the Haight homestead. Here Mr. Haight passed away November 25, 1932. After his death she continued the operation of the farm with the assistance of members of her family.

To the union of Mr. and Mrs. Haight was born eleven children, eight of whom are living. They are: Dan, Wilford, Howard, Harry and Zella, of Oakville; Gilbert, of Tomah, Wisconsin; Robert, of Wapello, and Ralph, of Morning Sun. Two daughters, Bessie and Hazel, and one son, Chester, preceded her in death. She is also survived by her twin sister, Miss Lizzie Downey, and sister, Mrs. Sarah Thomson, both of Oakville; six grandchildren and other relatives and friends who mourn her departure.

Mrs. Haight was a christian woman, lived her life in doing acts of kindness for her friends and neighbors. In her death the community has lost one who was a life-long resident, and was respected by all her acquaintances.

Funeral services were held from the home sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock the Pastor of St. Johns Catholic Church, of Burlington, officiating. Burial was in the Edwards Cemetery.
