Hugh D. Mathews, 72, 1109 E. Monroe, Mt. Pleasant, died late Thursday morning, May 28, 1981 at the Henry County Health Center.

Born Dec. 13, 1908 at Mt. Union, he was the son of Harlan and Maggie Young Mathews. In August 1930 at Waterloo, he married Mildred Schenk who died in 1950. On june 4, 1959 at Cedar Rapids he married Mary J. Shaw who survives.

Mr. Mathews was a lifelong resident of the Pleasant Lawn and Mt. Union areas. He was a guard at the Iowa State Penitentiary, Ft. Madison, for 10 years and had farmed most of his life. He was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are one son, John D. Mathews of Mt. Union; one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Margaret) Long of Knoxville; one brother, John Mathews of Sun City, Ariz.; five grandchildren.

His parents, one brother and one sister also preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 31 at the Weir Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant. Dr. Robert P. Robinson of the First United Methodist Church will officiate with interment in the Trinity Cemetery, Mt. Union. Friends may call as they desire after noon Saturday at the funeral home.
