Donald J. Curtis, 96, of Columbus Junction, Iowa, died Monday, August 27, 2007 at the Colonial Manor Care Center in Columbus Junction.

Funeral services for Donald will be Thursday, August 30, 2007 at 11:00am at the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Columbus Junction. Rev. Catherine Whitlatch will officiate.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 29th, from 4:00-700pm at the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. Burial will be in the Columbus City Cemetery. Following the services and interment there will be a time of food and fellowship at the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church. Memorials may be directed to the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church, the Washington County Hospice and the Eldon Depot Restoration Project in Donald’s name. Donald Jay Curtis was born December 20, 1910 in Wapello County, Iowa, the son of Stanley W. and Mary O. (Warren) Curtis. Don was a 1930 graduate of Batavia High School, and on December 20, 1931 he was united in marriage to Mae Laughlin in Agency, Iowa. Don was a long time resident of Columbus Junction, moving here in 1951 from Eldon, Iowa. He worked for the Rock Island Railroad from 1935-1974, maintaining the railroad tracks. Don was a member of the United Methodist Church. He enjoyed making wood crafts which his granddaughter detailed for selling at craft shows. Don also enjoyed repairing furniture, gardening, tending flowers, watching the Cubs and Cardinals’ baseball games and especially spending time with his family. One of his greatest accomplishments was building his own home in 1955 while never missing a day of work.

Don will be dearly missed by his daughter, Donna Mae Cox of Marshalltown, IA; his 2 sons, Ronald E. Curtis and his wife, Lilyan of Davenport, IA and Robert L. Curtis and his wife, Cheryl of Columbus Junction; 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 2 step-great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandson and 2 step great-great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Max Curtis of Des Moines and Raymond Curtis of Ottumwa, IA; and 1 sister, Helen Surber of Agency, IA.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in December 1988; 4 brothers, Robert, Warren, Ralph and Carol Curtis; and 2 sisters, Anna Parrott and Mary Gibb.
