M. Gerald Buffington, 90, of rural Columbus Junction, died Sunday evening, March 12, 2006, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. The son of O.C. and Lois Jennings Buffington, he was born May 3, 1915, on the farm where he lived all of his life in rural Columbus Junction. On June 12, 1938, he married Verena Thompson at West Liberty. He was a graduate of Wyman High School. He was an 80-year member of the Spring Run United Methodist Church. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Maribeth and Richard Nelson of Davenport and Phyllis and Larry Close of Zimmerman, Minn.; three sons, Phillip and Robyn Buffington of Mt. Union, Tony and Cindy Buffington of Winfield and Chris and Marcia Buffington of Columbus Junction; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and one sister.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 18, at the Spring Run United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Columbus City Cemetery.

Friends may call from noon until 7 p.m. Friday at the Honts Funeral Home in Winfield, where the family will meet with friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials for the Spring Run United Methodist Church.
