Frances F. Buffington, 85, of 2132 Marsh Ave. Mount Pleasant, died at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, 1997, at Henry County Health Center.

Born July 31, 1911, in Muscatine County, 3 1/2 miles south of Letts, she was the daughter of Fay R. and Jessie F. Dickerson Letts. On March 23, 1934, she married Berch B. Buffington at Cambridge, Ill. He died Dec. 25, 1965.

She was a 1929 graduage of Letts High School and attended two years and a summer at Coe College, where she earned her teaching certificate. She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority and Eta Sigma Phi (classic language) Sorority. She taught in two rural schools in Louisa County for four years. After raising her family, she worked in the Henry County Auditor's office for 10 years.

She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Winfield Chapter No. 4123 of Order of the Eastern Star, Farm Bureau and a 50 year member of "79" Club in the Pleasant Lawn community. She was an active donor to the Iowa State University Agriculture Research Farm at Wyman.

Survivors include three daughters, Loy Walker of Marengo, Claudia Streeter of Mount Pleasant, and Cherry Wong of Salt Lake City, Utah; two sons, Durk of Laguna Beach, Calif., and Nile of rural Mount Pleasant; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Irene Carr of Washington, and Cora Pingree of Sacramento, Calif.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, one sister and two brothers.

Friends may call beginning at noon today at Weir Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant.

The funeral for Mrs. Buffington will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Weir Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Mitchell officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Columbus City Cemetery in Columbus City.

A memorial has been established for the Iowa State University Agricultural Research Farm at Wyman. Contributions may be left at Weir Funeral Home.
