Byron “Gene” Hafner, 76, of Wapello, died Wednesday, February 7, 2007, at the Nursing and Rehab Center in Wapello.
Funeral services for Gene were Saturday, February 10, 2007, at 3:00 P.M. at the

Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Columbus Junction. Rev. Cathy Whitlatch of the United Methodist Church officiated. Memorials may be directed to the Great River Hospice or the Wapello Fire and Rescue in Gene’s name. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date. Byron Eugene Hafner was born at home on August 16, 1930 in Cranston, Iowa, the son Byron Hunter and Mollie (Crow) Hafner. Gene was a graduate of Letts High School in 1948. On September 9, 1950, he was united in marriage to Mary Margaret Utter in Davenport, Iowa. Gene was a farmer and worked at Deere and Company for 28 years. He was a Little League Coach, a softball coach, a member of the Elks, President of the John Deere Credit Union board and a member of the UAW. Gene was a master tinkerer. He enjoyed refurbishing tractors, fishing, and playing with his grandchildren.

Gene will be deeply missed by his wife, Mary of rural Wapello; his children, Larry Allen Hafner and wife, Lyn of Iowa City, Donald James Hafner and wife, Beth of Davenport, Carolyn Hafner Iles and husband, Dwight of West Branch, Linda Beth Vogel, Dan Lawrence Hafner and wife, Beth and Roger Eugene Hafner and wife, Donna all of Bettendorf; 2 grandsons and 13 granddaughters; 3 great-grandsons and 5 great-granddaughters; his brother, James Hafner and his wife, Sandy of Sperry, Iowa; five sisters, Joyce Crull of Letts, Gae Crisman and her husband, Chris of Grand Junction, CO, Marianna Masteller and her husband, Ed of Erie, PA, Marjorie Golden and her husband, Jim of Grand Junction, CO and Gloria Newell of Columbus Junction; and several nieces and nephews.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents and a great-granddaughter, Mallory Park.
