MUSCATINE, Iowa - Violette Annette Birkhofer, 84, Muscatine, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at Lutheran Homes.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Mike Janes will officiate. Pallbearers are her nieces and nephews, Linda Jones, Sheryl Sell, Kevin Birkhofer, Steve Calvelage, George Calvelage and Bill Stickrod. Burial will be at Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association.

She was born April 27, 1918, the daughter of Edward and Esther A. Lemkau Birkhofer.

She was a lifelong resident of the Muscatine area.

She worked at I & I Grocery from 1949-'57, then at Sun Mart until 1978. She worked in the grocery industry for almost 30 years.

She liked gardening, crocheting, sewing, cooking and ceramics. She loved her grandchildren and family.

Survivors include her son, Garry Birkhofer and wife Helen of St. Cloud, Minn.; three grandchildren, Adrianna, Amelia and Corey; three brothers, Howard E. Birkhofer and wife Betty of Muscatine, Melvin R. Birkhofer and wife Mary of Lake Isabella, Calif. and Ralph W. Birkhofer and wife Lois of Muscatine; and a sister, Beatrice A. Calvelage and husband Donald of Columbus Junction.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Robert and Gerald Birkhofer.
