Arthur J. Black, age 86, of Burlington, Iowa, died September 5, 1997, at his home.

Arthur was born January 17, 1911, at Letts, Iowa, the son of Elmer W. and Bertha (Foster) Black. He was a life long resident of this area. He first married Marie Holliday in 1930, at Muscatine. His second marriage was to Gertrude (Westbrook) Griffen in 1955 in New Mexico.

He was a member of the Lone Tree Masonic Lodge and was a 32 Degree Mason; a member of KAABA Shrine of Davenport; member of Eureka IOOF of Iowa City, Good Samaretan Encampment and Canon Iowa City #29. He was Past Master of Cedar Grange, Past State Overseer, Iowa State Grange and Past Youth Chairman of Iowa State Grange. He was a lifetime farmer till his retirement in 1971, and then continued as a builder/dealer of Wick Homes.

Survivors include: longtime companion, Marie Hurley, at home; daughters Mrs. Donna Ball, Nichols, Iowa and Mrs. Betty Lou Schroeder, Muscatine, Iowa. There are three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Also surviving is a sister, Anita (Sally) Parish, of Montpelier, and three nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marie, in 1995; and his second wife, Gertrude, in 1988; a brother, George; and one grandson, Gordon Schroeder, Jr.

Funeral services were held September 9 at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction, Iowa. Rev. Carla Hillyer officiated. Miss Donna Belle Hughes was organist. Burial was at the Letts Cemetery, Letts, Iowa. Pallbearers were Darrell Ball, Glen Hoyt, Kenneth Parish, Harry Black, John Staub, and Jim Black.
