Mrs. Iona A. Black, 78, dies

Mrs. Iona A. Black, 78, of 201 West Seventh Street, Washington, died Sunday, March 5, 1989, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, following a short illness.

She was born June 5, 1910, in Rock Island County, Illinois, the daughter of Joseph (Tony) and Margaret Schmidt Richter. She married Delbert Black December 2, 1931, in Rock Island. She graduated from Columbus Junction High School in 1928. Mr. and Mrs. Black farmed in the Columbus Junction area for 25 years before moving to the Iowa City-Coralville area in 1957. They moved to Washington in 1975.

Mrs. Black was a former correspondent for the Columbus Gazette and was a member of the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband of Washington; one son, Delbert Jr. of Davenport; one daughter, Barbara (Mrs. Lyle) Jons of Marshalltown; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Her parents and an infant brother preceded her in death.

Private family services will be held at a later date. The body has been cremated. The Callahan Funeral Home in Iowa City is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
