Eva Irene Bjornson, 81, Wapello, Iowa and formerly of Des Moines and Goldfield, Iowa, died Thursday morning, August 2, 2001, at the Wapello Nursing & Care Center. The daughter of Leonard and Eva Alvina Bertsch, she was born June 28, 1920, at Hedrick, Iowa. She married Orville Bjornson on Aug. 19, 1939, at Bethany, Mo.

Eva graduated from Avoca High School where she had played basketball. She was a member of the United Prebyterian Church at Goldfield.

She had worked as a sales clerk and then as a cook in the coffee shop at the Sears store at Merle Hay Mall in Des Moines for many years. She and Orville lived in Goldfield a number of years and then lived in Des Moines for about thirty years before recently coming to Wapello. Eva loved to cook and bake.

Survivors include her husband, Orville; two daughters, Karen Schnell of Wapello and Carolyn Mathis of Des Moines; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Smith of Portland, Ore.; and two brothers, Robert Bertsch of Harlan, Iowa and Rex Bertsch of Omaha, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Jimmy.

There are no services planned at this time and her body has been cremated.

The Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello has provided the care and arrangements for Eva Bjornson.
