Cleda Birney dies December 3

Mrs. Margaret Cleda Birney, 72, of 222 1/2 Main Street, Columbus Junction, died Monday morning, December 3, 1984, at Washington County Hospital, following an extended illness.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Stacy-Lewis Chapel with Rev. E.C. Wolfe officiating. Donna Belle Hughes was organist, and Brian and Kristie Cummings, vocalists. Casket bearers were Bruce Winter, Andrew, Dirk and Darrin McGill, Steve Royer, Ron Bouressa, John Peterson, David Storm, Randy, Tom, Tim, and Dan Harris and Ted Hills. Burial was in Long Creek Cemetery, Wapello.

She was born October 30, 1912, the daughter of James and Estella Woodruff Bennett. She married Carroll McGill in 1929. Later she married Homer Birney on August 6, 1960, at Kahoka, Missouri. He died January 1, 1968.

She is survived by five children, Mrs. Bernadine Winter of Camden, Tennessee, C. Lonnie McGill of Columbus Junction, Mrs. Marvin (Karen) Dent of Davenport, Mrs. Wilbur (Sandra) Tompkins of Letts and Mrs. R. "Bud" (Judy) Speth of Columbus Junction; 20 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Boyd of Columbus Junction and Mrs. Jennie Partington of Neodesha, Kansas.

Her husband, two sisters, four brothers and one great grandchild preceded her in death.
