George Birney Died At Washington

George Birney 66, owner and operator of the Washington Cafe for a number of years until his retirement in 1960, died at his home 220 East Seventh Street, Washington Sunday evening, November 19, 1961.

He had been failing in health for the past nine months and seriously ill for the last week.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Jones Funeral Home with the Rev. Lloyd Latta in charge. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Military rites at the graveside were conducted by the American Legion.

Mr. Birney was born November 18, 1895 in Washington, a son of John G. and Estalena Stafford Birney. He married Ferne Fuhr January 28, 1920.

He entered military service July 22, 1918 and served at Camp Pike, Arkansas and at Camp Dodge. He had served as vice commander of Leon Beatty American Legion Post at Washington.

Survivors are his wife; two sons; George Jr. and Robert, both of Washington' three grandchildren; two brothers; Homer of Columbus Junction and Lott of Haskins and one sister, Mrs. LeRoy Krotz of Washington.
