Columbus Gazette, April 13, 1988

Mrs. Helen M. Borchardt, age 83, 516 Dodge Street, Iowa City, died Wednesday morning, April 13, 1988, at the Washington County Hospital in Washington, following a brief illness. She has recently been residing in the Halcyon House, a Methodist retirement center, in Washington.

Mrs. Borchardt was born February 5, 1905, in Nichols, the daughter of Josiah and Della Coyner Rummells. She attended Iowa State College in Ames and later Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. On October 15, 1926, she was married at Sioux City to E.H. Borchardt.

The couple came to Iowa City in 1965. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of WEst Palm Beach, Florida, and Chapter AZ Florida, PEO Sisterhood, and a member of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Unity Church in Lee's Summit, Missouri.

Survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. Preston (Joyce) Edmondson and Mrs. Wayne (Edonna) Gamon, both of Washington; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild; two sisters, Mrs. Walter (Edna) TeSTrake of Eustis, Florida, and Mrs. Hubert (Dorothea) Tipton of Belleair Beach, Florida; one brother, Mr. Harold J. Rummells of West Liberty.

She was preceded in death by her husband in May, 1987, a brother, Howard Rummells, and a sister, Amanda Shannon, April, 1988.

Funeral services were held Sunday, April 17, at 2:30 p.m. from the Snider Funeral Home in West Liberty with Rev. Allen Eastland and Rev. Ruth Ruan assisting.

Organist was Mr. Les VanHelst. Casket bearers were Ronald Greene, Jeffry Greene, Larry Greene, Angela Gamon and Evan Gamon.

Honorary casket bearers were Wayne Gamon, Preston Edmondson and Keith Borchart.

Burial was in the North Prairie Cemetery in West Liberty. A memorial fund has been established.
