Donald Lamonte Bell, 86, of Wapello, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at the Wapello Care Center.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction. Honorary pallbearers will be Andy Weeks, Brian Morris, Earl DeVore, Michael Miller, Brian Singleton and Chris Edaburn. There was no visitation. A memorial has been established at the funeral home.

Mr. Bell was born Sept. 23, 1915, in Dayton, the son of Joseph and Ida Bell. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corps as a young man. He was also a farmhand for several years. He retired from the University of Iowa in September of 1980. After retirement he managed Prairie Village in Wapello. He was a member of the Fredonia Gospel Church for many years where he served on the church board. On Oct. 16, 1994, he married Merle Frances Strong in Fredonia. He enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include his wife, Merle of Wapello; a daughter, Betty Berry of Muscatine; a son, Donald R. Bell of Des Moines; two step-daughters, Rosalyn Thompson of Riley, Ind., and Sharon Shaw of Terre Haute, Ind., one step-son, Glenn Strong of Wapello; and one sister, Edna Tedford of Washington.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wives Dorothy and Maxine, six brothers; one sister; and four grandchildren.
