James Arthur Bayne, 77, of Fairfax, Iowa, died Tuesday evening, October 4, 2005, at the Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. The son of William LeRoy and Grace Cowie Bayne, he was born September 28, 1928, near Wapello. He married Betty Jean Bates on December 23, 1956 at the Presbyterian Church in Wapello.

James graduated from the Oakville Consolidated School in 1946. He obtained his B.A. degree from Iowa State Teacher's College at Cedar Falls in 1951, his M.A. degree from the University of Iowa in 1958, and his E.E.D., Specialist Degree in educational Administration in 1960 from the University of Iowa.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean; his son James Charles "Jim" and Catherine Bayne of Fairfax; his grandchildren Jacob Charles Bayne, Adelaide Elizabeth Bayne and William Robert Bayne; two brothers, Edwin LeRoy and Mary Louise Bayne of Wapello and Frederick Merlin and Norma Bayne of Wapello.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant son, Robert William Bayne.

In leiu of flowers a memorial fund was established.

The Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello provided the care and arrangements for James Bayne.

The funeral service for James Bayne was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 8, 2005, at the St. Patricks's Catholic Church at Fairfax, with the Rev. Diana A. Hoover of St. Mark's United Methodist Church of Cedar Rapids officiating. Music was provided by Vernon Cerveny, organist, and his son, Jim Bayne, vocalist. Pallbearers were Edwin Bayne, Fred Bayne, Bob Bates, Don Welter, Bill Lynch, Dave Neuhaus, Adrian Ringold and Bill Boland.

Cremation followed the funeral and a graveside service was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Wapello Cemetery, officiated by Edwin Bayne, with military rites by the Wapello V.F.W. Glenn Allen Post 5166.

Visitation where the family met with friends was from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Fairfax.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1955.

His professional and business careers included a
high school teacher and coach at Cotter
Consolidated Schools 1956-1957 school year, high
school principal at Solon Community Schools 1958-
1962 for four years,principal and superintendent

at Linn Mar Community Schools 1962-1966 for four years, assistant superintendent at Marion Public Schools 1966-1967 school year, superintendent of college community schools 1967-1978 for eleven years, sales representative for Metropolitan Supply Company 1978-1998 for twenty years, and assisted at Bayne's School and Office Equipment at Fairfax from 1998 to the present.

He was a member of the National Education Association, the Iowa State Education Association, the Iowa Association of School Administrators, Phi Delta Kappa, and the Lions Club and Elks Lodge both of Cedar Rapids. He was also a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids.

James enjoyed his family, was an avid Hawk Fan, enjoyed fishing - especially the annual trip to Canada with friends, and winters in Florida.
