Gilbert W. Bates died suddenly Satuday morning, March 2, 1963 at his home in Columbus Junction.

Gilbert Wesley Bates was born in Henry county, Iowa, September 13, 1896, son of Lewis and Nettie Allender Bates and was aged 66 years, 5 months and 19 days.

He was married to Ava James January 29, 1930 at Reno, Nevada. They lived in Winfield for 30 years then moved to Columbus Junction where Mrs. Bates operates Rose's Beauty Shop. Mr. Bates was owner-operator of Bates Recreation Hall in Winfield.

He was a veteran of World War I and a member of American Legion Post No. 643 of Winfield.

He is survived by his wife and a daughter, Mrs. L.E. (Rose)Brown of Columbus Junction and one son, Gilbert Jr., of Livermore California and by three grandchildren.

The body was taken to the Barton McKasson Funeral Home at Winfield where services were hed Monday afternoon at two o'clock conducted by the Rev. C.E. Chandler.

Burial was in the Winfield Scott Township cemetery with military graveside rites.
