Ernest Ralph Bartenhagen, 83, of Muscatine, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at his home.

Born July 15, 1920, in Muscatine, he was the son of Fred and Helena Freida Maria Baars Bartenhagen. He married Wanda Reinier on Nov. 1, 1941, in Mystic, Iowa.

He was a member of the Island Methodist Church, past member of the Muscatine Island Co-op, served on the L&M School Board for over 20 years and was a past president, past member of the Moose Lodge and also served on the Farm Bureau Board.

He farmed in the Muscatine area for many years, enjoyed going to the Senior Citizens to play cards, and reading. He was also known for his creative engineering.

Survivors include his children, Fred Bartenhagen and wife Joan of Muscatine; Keith Bartenhagen of Muscatine; Roger Bartenhagen and wife Rebecca of Muscatine; Kathy Lund and husband Chris of Wasilla, Alaska, and Karen Varnum and husband Jeff of Wapello; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Wanda; two brothers, Harold and Richard; two sisters, Dora Boyle and Johanna Shoultz.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept.5, at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Gerry Kahler will officiate the services. Pallbearers are Jack Wilson, Don Wilson, Dick Wilson, Rich Bartenhagen, George Taylor and Wayne Shoultz. Honorary bearers will be Earnest's nephews.

Burial will be at Muscatine Memorial Park, with a time of fellowship will be held at the Island Methodist Church.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the Island Methodist Church.
