Alva William Black, Jr., age 74, of rural Wapello, died Friday morning, October 3, 2008, at his home. The son of Alva W. Black, Sr. and Anna Hill, he was born on December 12, 1933 near Mediapolis. He married Delores Poggemiller on January 27, 1951 at Burlington.

Junior attended Mediapolis schools and after working in the quarry a few years he started his own construction work as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church at Mediapolis.

Junior was an avid sportsman that loved to hunt, fish, and trap.

He is survived by his wife, Delores; two sons, Rollin Black of Wapello and Alva W. ‘Bill’ Black, III & RaeNita of Wapello; five grandchildren, Chastine & Steve Reynolds, Shawnta Black, Brett Black, Aaron Black, and Beth & Josh Hardin; four great grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth Black of Burlington; a sister, Juanita & Clifford Bell of Milton; a sister-in-law, Devona Griffin of Columbus Junction; an aunt, Wilma Heller of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Dennis; and a brother, Robert.

The funeral ceremony for Junior Black will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, October 6, 2008, at the United Methodist Church at Wapello with Rev. Scott Smith officiating. Burial will follow at the Kossuth Cemetery at Mediapolis.

Friends may call after 2:00 PM on Sunday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello where the family will meet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefits of Great River Hospice and the Morning Sun Community Ambulance Service.
