Hilbert E. Whitaker, age 97, a longtime resident of Oakville, Iowa, died Sunday morning, October 5, 2008, at the Morning Sun Care Center. The son of Levi and Bessie Whistler Whitaker, he was born on August 1, 1911 at New Boston, Illinois. He married M. Elmira Bishop on May 1, 1937 at Burlington. She preceded him in death on May 9, 2003.

Hilbert attended Prairie Point grade school and attended Huron school the first year of its opening. He was a farmer and loved to garden and share his produce with others. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed visiting with his many family and friends of the Oakville community. He was a member of the Church of God Holiness at Oakville which he helped in building the original church.

He is survived by two sons, David & Minnie Whitaker and Dale & Kathie Whitaker both of Oakville; six grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; and a half sister, Edna Whitaker. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step mother, Esther; three brothers, Charlie, Levi, Jr., and an infant Virgil; two sisters, Lucetta and Mary; and two half brothers, John and Alfred.

The funeral ceremony for Hilbert Whitaker will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello officiated by Pastor Dan Doolin. Burial will follow at the Edwards Cemetery at Oakville.

Friends may call after 2:00 PM on Tuesday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home where the family will meet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

A Memorial Fund has been established for the Oakville Volunteer Foundation for flood relief support.
