John William Hupp, age 87 of Wapello, died Saturday morning, September 6, 2008, at the Great River Medical Center at West Burlington. The son of Frank and Olive Masters Hupp, he was born on December 9, 1920 at Morning Sun. He married Darlene Beatrice Todd on February 23, 1947 at Yarmouth, Iowa. She preceded him in death on April 20, 2008.

John graduated from Wapello High School. He enlisted in the US Navy after the Pearl Harbor Attack and proudly served on the USS Nevada. He farmed south of Wapello. He had also worked as a carpenter with Askren & Nelson and had sold model homes.

John was a member of the United Methodist Church and Methodist Men at Wapello, the Methodist District Building Committee, the Kiwanis Club of Wapello, REC Board of Directors, and one of the original members of the Louisa County Historical Society.

He was will known in Eastern Iowa for his beautiful handmade rugs. He also enjoyed woodworking and also designed and made many tools that were used on the farm.

John is survived by three sons, Glen & Roxanne Hupp of Wever, Dale & Linda Hupp of Riverdale, and Evan & Julie Hupp of Ely; a daughter-in-law, Jeannie Hupp of Unionville, Virginia; eleven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a sister, Wanda Harris of Morning Sun. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Darlene; a son, Gene; and two sisters, Francis Robertson and Edna Hinds.

The funeral ceremony for John Hupp will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at the United Methodist Church at Wapello with Rev. Sue-Ellen Sherman officiating. Burial will follow at the Oakland Cemetery, rural Morning Sun. The family and friends will gather for a lunch and visit after the committal at the United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

Friends may call after noon on Monday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello where the family will meet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the United Methodist Church Building Fund.
