On Sunday evening, July 27, 2008, at his home in Wapello, Virgil Edwin Corey was called home by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who is the God of all creation. He was born on September 23, 1916 at Morning Sun, the son of John L. and Maxine Martin Corey.

He married Elsie Gaide on May 2, 1941 at Des Moines, Iowa. She preceded him in death on December 20, 2001.

Virgil graduated from Morning Sun High School and attended Cornell College for two years. After graduating from Iowa State University in Vocational Agriculture, he taught Voc Ag for fourteen years. He began farming in 1950 and after retiring from farming and teaching he was elected as a Representative to the Iowa House and served for ten years. For the last twenty years after asking Jesus Christ into his life as his Lord and Savior, he enjoyed sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with others.

Virgil was a member of the Solid Rock Baptist Church at Wapello. He was active in church and politics. He was of the Masonic Order.

Virgil was preceded in death by is parents; his wife, Elsie; a son, Dean and his wife Sue; and two brothers, Dean and Cecil Elmer.

He is survived by three children,Virgil ‘Brother Thomas’ Corey, Jr. of Jersey City, New Jersey, Rev. Carolyn Corey of Detroit, Michigan, and John & Nancy Corey of Morning Sun; six grandchildren, Pam Calloway, Jennifer Brost, Sara Whitlock, Stephanie Gilbert, Marc Corey, and Matthew Corey; eight great grandchildren; two sisters, Eleanor Jones of Wapello and Eloise Campbell of Exline; four nephews; and five nieces.

The funeral ceremony for Virgil Corey will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, August 3, 2008, at the Solid Rock Baptist Church at Wapello with Pastor Dan Doolin officiating. Burial will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery at Morning Sun.

Friends may call after noon on Saturday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello where the family will meet friends from 6:30 to 8:00 PM.

A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the Solid Rock Baptist Church.
