Richard "Dick" Wayne Werner 1944 - 2006

Richard 'Dick' Wayne Werner, age 62, of Wapello, Iowa, died Saturday afternoon, November 18, 2006, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. The son of Stanley and Beatrice Walker Werner, he was born September 12, 1944 at Muscatine. He married Shirlee Della Penna on March 1, 1968 at Columbus Junction, Iowa.

Richard graduated from Louisa-Muscatine High School in 1964. He joined the US Navy and served on the USS York County from 1965 to 1969. He was honorably discharged from service on July 21, 1969 as an Engineman 2nd Class.

He graduated from Eastern Iowa Community College with a diploma in Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration on July 31, 1970. He became a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 387 which later merged with Local 25. He worked as a pipefitter for 31 years, retiring in 2002.

Richard always enjoyed spending time in the outdoors. After retirement he was able to spend more time fishing and camping throughout Iowa. He looked forward to his daily routine of meeting friends for coffee in the morning. He also loved taking vacations with his family, most notable camping at the Yellow River State Forest and in southern Texas. He especially enjoyed his dog, Odie.

Richard will be deeply missed by his wife, Shirlee; two sons, Lee Werner & Traci Cross of Hopkins, Minnesota and Shawn Werner of Wapello; a brother, Darryl & Viola Werner of Fruitland; and a sister, Judy & Jim Bartenhagen of Fruitland.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The graveside ceremony for Richard 'Dick' Werner will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, November 22, 2006, at the Grandview Cemetery at Grandview, with Pastor Rick Crooks officiating. Following the service the family and friends will gather for a lunch and fellowship at the Fellowship Hall of the Grandview Community Bible Church.

Friends may call from noon to 7:00 PM on Tuesday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello where the family will meet friends from 4:30 to 7:00 PM. A brief ceremony will be held at 6:00 PM.

A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the Louisa County Historical Society, the University of Iowa Holden Cancer Center, the Izaak Walton League, and the Iowa City Hospice.
