Leona Louise Hardin Smith, 85, of Mediapolis, formerly of Oakville, died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006, at Unity Hospital in Muscatine.
Born March 28, 1920, in Lee County, she was the daughter of Clarence Edwin and Mary Helen Duff Lange. On May 31, 1937, she married Fred C. Hardin in Burlington. He died on June 26, 1972. On May 14, 1983, she married Will C. Smith in Oakville. He died on Oct. 26, 1998.
Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and also worked at Oakville Feed and Grain for 17 years. She retired in 1983.
She moved with her family to the Oakville area in 1933 and attended the Oakville and Huron Schools. She was a member of the Oakville United Methodist Church and its UMW circle, where she made dishes and treats for sales, suppers, and funeral lunches. After her marriage to Will Smith, she spent her winters in Texas with him before his death. She was a member of the Toolesboro Good Will Club and was a former member of the Golden Hour Study Club. She enjoyed knitting and embroidery, and made afghans or embroidered quilts.
Survivors include four daughters, Joyce Swafford of Oakville, Mary Wykert of Mediapolis, and Jane Minnis and Ellen Dean, both of Morning Sun; one son, Keith Hardin of Russell; one stepdaughter, Patsy Gish of Wapello; one stepson, Will Smith of Waukee; 14 grandchildren; 24 great–grandchildren; eight step–grandchildren; 14 step–great–grandchildren; one sister, Rosemary Malcom of Mount Pleasant; one brother, Cecil Lange of Pekin, Ill.; one stepsister, Marilyn Thomas of Cedar Falls; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, one in infancy.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis, with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral for Mrs. Smith will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home, with the Revs. John Gaulke and Scott Smith officiating. Korkee Carruthers will provide music. Cremation will follow and burial will be at a later date in Edwards Cemetery in Oakville.
A memorial has been established for Oakville United Methodist Women.
