John William Hammond 1931 - 2006

John William Hammond, age 75, of Wapello, Iowa, died Monday morning, August 14, 2006, at the Great River Medical Center at West Burlington, after a brief illness. The son of Max Albert and Josephine Morrison Hammond, he was born January 23, 1931 in Louisa County, Iowa. He married Mary Helmick on January 12, 1957 at the Louisa Center Church in Louisa County.

He was raised on a farm in Louisa County and attended school in Louisa County and Columbus Junction. He then served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. He worked in the Louisa County Engineers office for almost 40 years before retiring in 1993.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5166 of Wapello, the Odessa Chapter of Ducks Unlimited, and Pheasants Forever. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and his family, especially his new granddaughter Kamdyn and great-grandson Christian.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; two sons, Max & Adrianna Hammond and Jeff & Katie Hammond both of Wapello; two grandsons, Sgt. Christopher Hammond of the Army National Guard stationed at Fort Rucker, Alabama and Lance Corporal Joshua Hammond of the US Marines stationed in Iraq; two granddaughters, Samantha & Aaron Rosbury and Kamdyn Hammond all of Wapello; and a great-grandson, Christian Rosbury; his mother, Josephine Hammond of Columbus Junction; his brother, Richard & Lorna Hammond of Wapello; his sister, Sharon & Gene Zimmer of Lemars, Iowa; four aunts; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. His friendship will be missed by all. He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Grace Ann Gustison.

The funeral ceremony for John Hammond will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, August 17, 2006, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello, with Max L. Hammond officiating. Burial will follow at the Wapello Cemetery with military rites by the Glenn Allen Post 5166 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Friends may call from noon to 8:00 PM on Wednesday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home where the family will meet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

A Memorial Fund has been established in lieu of flowers.
