Janice A. Hagerla

Janice A. Hagerla, 70, of West Burlington, died at 7:05 a.m. Sunday, July 16, 2006, at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City from complications of Pulmonary Fibrosis and Sclera Derma.

Born Feb. 13, 1936, in West Point, she was the daughter of Francis Dutch and Lola Stewart Fullenkamp. On Nov. 17, 1953, she married Ronald W. Deen. He died June 9, 1973. She then married Mark R. Hagerla on May 29, 1976.

Mrs. Hagerla worked at Sylvania in Burlington and General Electric. She and her husband Mark owned and operated Hagerla's Grocery Stores, catering and holiday fruit baskets.

She was a member of Iowa State Legislative Ladies League, Elizabeth Circle of Kings Daughters and an active participant of the Iowa Pulmonary Support Group. She also was a counsel member of St. Paul United Church of Christ of West Burlington, and enjoyed volunteering, cooking, painting and decorating. She loved meeting with her coffee group every morning and looked forward to her swimming exercises. She enjoyed birdwatching on the farm, especially the red bird that came to her window.

Survivors include her husband; six sons, Gary Deen, Ron Deen, Allan Deen and Duane Deen, all of West Burlington, Steven Hagerla of Phoenix, John Hagerla of Kerrville, Texas; three daughters, Vickie Flake of Wapello, Janette Mertz of Phoenix and Joni Boling of West Burlington; 20 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Joan Wunnenberg of Mediapolis and Geraldine "Jeri" Webb of West Burlington; and one brother, Michael Fullenkamp of Burlington.

Besides her first husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson and one brother.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Lunning Chapel, with family meeting friends from 5 to 8 p.m.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Dean Moberg officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for St. Paul United Church of Christ of West Burlington and Iowa Pulmonary Support Group.
