August 28, 1997 - The Morning Sun News-Herald

Orville F. Baird died August 9, in a Michigan City, Indiana Hospital. Funeral services were held at The First Presbyterian Church of Michigan City, on August 13.

He was born on January 18, 1914 on the family farm near Morning Sun, Iowa. He was the youngest son of Joseph W. and Ida Faris Baird. He was a graduate of Mediapolis High School. On May 17, 1940, he married Gladys Scott in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Michigan City and sang in the church choir. In their presentation of the Messiah, he was a soloist in the production for thirty-seven years.

He was a talented wood carver and wrote poetry as a hobby. His sense of humor appeared often in his poetry. This was brought out in this poem he wrote for his daughters when he had his eightieth birthday.

T' was 80 long years ago
That a 9th child was born
To Ida and Joe.
And Joe exclaimed
In Great Delight
"Well at long last
We've gotten it right."
But Ida shook her head
"I just don't know
He seems quite average
Even a mite slow."
Now I love babies
And I know you do too,
But I'm forty one
And you are fifty-two,
Maybe we better quit
If he's the best we can do"
So a pact was made
That very same day
That no more babies
Would come their way.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys, and three daughters, Janice Ivers and Ann Cunningham, both of St. John, Indiana, and Karen McConnell, Livonia, Michigan, six grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and seven brothers. A memorial has been established for the First Presbyterian Church of Michigan City.

Those attending the funeral services from this area were Patty Bryant, Cedar Rapids, Kenneth and Dorothy Marie Baird, Wapello and Eleanor Baird, Mediapolis.
