I have since learned that Philemon Ladue was Charles' mother. Francis Ladue married the widow Philemon Liberty sometime around 1866 and moved to Iowa with her children from the previous marriage. Charles was born to Francis and Philemon in Iowa. Francis is the father of Joseph Ladue, founder of Dawson City in the Yukon Territory.
