Mrs. Hugh Torrence:
Rhoda Dike was her maiden name. She was born in Windsor County, Vermont, on the 14th of December, 1828; with her parents she moved to Medina County, Ohio, in 1884, and to Delaware, Ohio, in 1839. In 1840 she was converted and united with the Protestant Episcopal church.

She came to Iowa in the spring of 1854 and was married on the 28th of June, of that year, to Mr. Hugh Torrence, who survives to mourn the loss of a most valuable companion; also three sons, Daniel, Park, and Wilson Torrence, all young men of good promise of future usefulness, and two daughters, Mary and Lillie, who tenderly and with that love that is only known to a truly filial heart for an affectionate and self-sacrificing mother.

For thirty-six years she adorned with marked consistency and meekness the high profession of a christian life; her example was worthy of Imitation while graced with characteristic modesty she was firm and true to God and to her family and all her friends. Her clarity to all was unfailing and every one loved her and spoke kindly of her while she lived, and tears of keenest sorrow will fall that she is taken so soon.
