Mrs. Mary Vahl, 78, Dies After Illness Of Only Few Hours

Mrs. Mary Vahl, widow of John Vahl, died Tuesday at 11 p.m. in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Oscar Martin, 391 Eighteenth street. Mrs. Vahl was ill only a few hours. As Mary Simmens she was born near Agerton, Berne, Switzerland, June 5, 1858, coming to America in her early youth with her parents who settled near Alburnett.

She was married to John Vahl in 1879 and had made her home in and near Marion since. Mrs. Vahl affiliated with the Evangelical church in her youth and later with the Lutheran church. Mr. Vahl died June 13, 1897. Two sisters have also preceded her in death.

She is survived by one daughter. Mrs. Oscar Martin, and three sons Harold A., and Louis C. Vahl of Marion and Henry W. Vahl of Cedar Rapids, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the Yocom chapel with the Rev. E. T. Gough officiating. Burial will be in Oak Shade cemetery.
