OBITUARY.

John Vahl, Drowned in the Cedar River River, Sunday, June 13 - Born in Germany, April 25, 1858 - A Resident of Linn County for Twenty-two Years.

From the German Lutheran church at Marion yesterday occurred the funeral of the late John Vahl, who met an untimely death In the Cedar river near Linn Junction on Sunday last.

Hundreds of sympathizing friends paid their last tribute to the deceased, the church being packed to suffocation and many taking seats in the shade of neighboring trees. Rev. Deckman of Cedar Rapids officiated, a beautiful feature of the service being the anthems sung by the fifteen singers from Rev. Deckman’s church. The interment was at the Marion cemetery.

John Vahl was born in Germany, April 25, 1858, and removed to this county in 1873, settling in Linn county in 1875. In 1881 he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Simon* [various spellings], and to them have been born four children, Henry aged 17; Laura, 15; Louie, 7 and Harold, aged eighteen months. By his industry and economy Mr. Vahl had accumulated quite a little property, and leaves his family well provided for. His death was a great shock to a wide circle of friends, who held him in universally high esteem.
