Funeral services for Chester L. Pickering, 71, of Springville will be held at the Viola Methodist church Thursday, Dec. 31, at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Melvin Miller will officiate.

Burial will be in Wilcox cemetery. Casketbearers are M. W. Ginkens, Glen Whitcomb, Keith Johnson, Dale Slager, Franklin Kenney and James Wild.

Pickering died Monday, Dec. 28, at an Iowa City hospital, following an illness of several weeks.

The son of William and Mary Frisby Pickering, he was born March 4, 1899, in Linn county. He attended Linn county schools. On Aug. 29,1928, he married Gladys Metcalf. The couple farmed in Jones and Linn counties before she died in March, 1969. He married Edith Blohm Feb. 21, 1970, and the couple lived on a farm, route 1, Springville.

Survivors include his wife, Edith; one son, James of Viola; one sister, Mrs. Frank Calvert, Anamosa.

Also five step children: Mrs. Paul Brokaw, Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo.; Mrs. Minehart Freese, Alburnett; Mrs. Arthur Hinrichs, Martelle; Marvin Blohm and Mrs. Freida Martens, both of Center Junction.

He was preceded in death by his first wife; two sons, one daughter, his parents, two sisters and two brothers.
