Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette Saturday February 11, 1899
At 9:15 this morning occurred the death of C.P. Metcalf, an honored and respected pioneer of this city, at his home 1285 Second avenue, at the age of 78 years. The funeral services will be held from the residence, probably Monday afternoon, although no definite announcement can be made today. Rev. J.E. Palmer, pastor of the Universalist church, will officiate. The remains will be laid at rest in Oak Hill cemetery.
Commodore P. Metcalf was born in Ohio, in 1821, and removed to Cedar Rapids with his family forty years ago. For many years he followed the carriage builder's trade, in which he was an expert, but for the past fifteen years he had not been engage actively. He was a man of many sterling attributes of character, and respected by all who knew him. He is survived by the wife and mother, and six children, all of whom are well known at home and abroad. They are: Chas A. Metcalf of St. Louis; B.A. Metcalf of Denver; Mrs. Walter Stebbins of Victor, Col.; T. Scott Metcalf, the pioneer printer and binder, L.F. Metcalf and R.L. Metcalf all of this city.
The deceased enjoyed a remarkable degree of health up to last week. On Sunday he was stricken with the grip, which developed into pneumonia. His condition grew rapidly worse and surrounded by members of his family he passed peacefully into eternal slumber this morning. The children in Colorado have been notified, but it is not known whether they will attend the funeral on account of the blockading of the railroads in their state.
