Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette Thursday January 29, 1903
T.S. Metcalf received a telegram from St. Louis last evening between 5 and 6 o'clock conveying the sad intelligence of the death of his brother, Charles J. Metcalf, which occurred in a hospital in that city yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock. No further particulars were given. The announcement came with shocking surprise to relatives here who knew nothing about his being ill, and it will be read with regret by many in this city, for he was an old Cedar Rapid boy and was well and favorably known to many here before he left for residence in St. Louis. He had been there for about twelve years.
The decedent was born and reared in Cedar Rapids and made his home in this city until he went to the Missouri metropolis. He was a printer by occupation and followed the business for a number of years before he departed for St. Louis. He was popular with all who knew him, quiet and unassuming in disposition and an energetic and industrious worker. Besides his mother, Mrs. C.P. Metcalf he is survived by four brothers and one sister, L. F. Metcalf, T.S. Metcalf, Robert Metcalf of Cedar Rapids, Ben Metcalf and Mrs. Walter Stebbins of Colorado. He was the oldest of the family and was 44 or 45 years of age. He never married.
Scott Metcalf left last night for St. Louis and the remains will be brought here for burial. Arrangements will be made for the funeral later of which due announcement will be made.
