Marion Sentinel Thursday June 28, 1891
Died, at his home north of Marion, June 14th, Frederick John George Roy.
He was born in France, March 10th, 1819, and was the fourth of nine children. His father died when he was ten years old. His mother died in her ninety-sixth year. Two brothers and three sisters are still living and reside in France.
He was married in France, to Miss Louise Kate Lebre, Sept. 24th, 1846. They left Frances for the United States, April 22nd, 1854, settling first in Ohio, and on June 22nd, 1855, he moved to Dubuque, Iowa, and in 1865, to the place of his death.
They have three children, Mrs. Munier, the oldest, and Mrs. Lucy Touro, the youngest near Marion, Mrs. Kate Lobey the second, still resides in France. Besides the wife and mother, and three daughters, fourteen grandchildren remain to mourn his loss. Mrs. Debrie, oldest sister of Mrs. Roy, now in her eighty-sixth year, and son from Riverside, Iowa, were present at the funeral. Mr. Roy was the first of the French settlers north of Marion. He was a member of the Protestant church in France, a Hugenot, a descendent of the survivors of the St. Bartholomew massacre.
But on coming to this country, not having the privileges of the church where the services were in the French language his love to Christ had become cold but when he realized that he was drawing near to death his first love seemed to come back, giving evidence that though absent from the body he is present with the Lord. He was a kind husband, and affectionate father and respected by all who knew him. The funeral service was at the house, conducted by Rev. Alex S. Marshall, and his remains were followed by many of his friends to the Marion cemetery.
