Death notice in the Thursday June 11, 1891 Marion Sentinel:
--Calvin Newman, one of Linn county's substantial and most prosperous farmers, came down to Marion last week on Wednesday and remained until evening to listen to Bishop Newman at the Methodist church. He returned home in his usual health, having enjoyed the fine lecture, but was taken very sick on the next day and died in the afternoon. He had taken cold while sitting near a window which resulted in the fatal grip. The deceased was one of the first settlers of Linn County and leaves many friends in this vicinity to mourn his sudden death.
