JOHN HINES DIES SUDDENLY
Served City as Street Commissioner For Nearly Twenty-five Years
John Hines, who for nearly a quarter of a century has served Marion as street commissioner, died suddenly Wednesday afternoon about 3:30, while at his work. He was engaged in putting cinders on South Fourteenth street, and was driving his team, hitched to a dump wagon, when stricken. When near the Larkin home, John Larkins noticed that Mr. Hines was acting queerly, and very soon after saw him topple over onto the wagon. He rushed to his assistance at once, but life was extinct. About two months ago Mr. Hines was taken seriously ill, but he recovered very quickly and was soon at his work again. But in all probability his recovery was only temporary. If he felt any illness Wednesday, he gave not hint of it to his family, but joked with them at the noonday meal.
Mr. Hines was seventy-two years of age and was born in New York, but has spent most of his life in Marion, coming here while a lad of about eight years. He was a plain, retiring man, but industrious and honorable in his dealings, a good neighbor and friend. During his long term of service as street commissioner, he has been an unusually efficient and careful worker, always looking out for the city's interests. He was married to Miss Mary Lyons in 1880, and the wife, together with the nine children, survive him. The children are William T., of Yakima, Wash., John H., of Los Angeles, Cal., Stephen J., of Marion, Louis, of Marion, Frank J., of Wiebaux, Mont., George, Edward and Misses Florence and Marion, of this city.
