The Marion Sentinel Thursday June 3, 1937
Marion lost a valued citizen last Thursday evening when Stephen J. Hines suddenly demonstrated the uncertainty of life. While locking the garage door on a nwe Oldsmobile he had brought home that day, his great heart quit on him and he keeled over and was not. The hour was 11:15 p.m.
He was known and loved as Steve. For thirty years he has had been employed by the American Express company--here much of the time as agent, and he was deservedly popular, for no one ever heard of his losing his temper or being other than courteous, even when times were trying. You wanted a favor, and no one else would grant it, if you were at all square you could get it of Steve. He would walk a mile out of his way to serve you or his company. He was a good citizen, served the community in various capacities. Was city treasurer for seven consecutive terms and had started in on his eighth. Always jolly and optimistic, he was a pleasant chap to be around, and had many cronies who will miss him sure. Last year he was so badly hurt in an auto crash while driving with a friend that his life was at times uncertain, but after two and a half months in the hospital he was nursed back to health and had about recovered his apparent normal self, and his death was indeed a shock. Evidently he was not as well as he had led his friends to believe.
Steve was born in Marion Dec. 14, 1883, the son of John and Mary Lyon Hines, and his entire life had been tied up with this community. He was educated here, and graduated from Marion high with the class of 1903. He was married June 19, 1912 to Mrs. Ida Joy. Their one child died in infancy. A step-daughter, Miss Ida Joy makes her home in Los Angeles. He leaves besides the widow, his mother who on this same day was observing her own birthday; five brothers, Will T., of Yakima, Wash.; Frank, of Sterling City, Calif.; Louis R. of Inglewood, Calif.; Edward of Sioux City; and John of Marion; two sisters, Marian and Florence, also of this city.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 from the Yocom chapel, with the Rev. H.O. Allen, pastor of the Congregational church, in charge of the services. The pallbearers were Frank and Glenn Cheadle, George Wood, W.K. Lothian, D.C. Thomas and Harold Ballard. Mrs. Ethyle Wood Burmingham sang. Burial was in Oak Shade cemetery.
